## THE LIE WE’RE TOLD
**THE LIE:** Your attention belongs to you. You choose what to watch. The algorithm serves you.
**THE TRUTH:** Your attention is a *loan* from your *nafs*—and the shadow you feed today will demand payment tomorrow.
The lie is elegant. Your screen glows. Your thumb scrolls. You tell yourself: *I am in control.* You are the master of this tiny universe. You choose the video. You choose the news. You choose the outrage. The algorithm is just a helpful servant.
But the algorithm does not serve you.
The algorithm *feeds* you—the same way a farmer feeds a chicken.
Every swipe is a grain. Every minute of doomscrolling is a seed planted in the soil of your shadow. And the shadow grows. It learns your hunger. It knows which fear makes you click, which anger makes you stay, which envy makes you buy. By the time you realize you are not the farmer but the chicken—it is too late. Your attention has been harvested.
Shah tells a story of a man who spent his life chasing his own shadow. He ran faster. The shadow ran faster. He turned—the shadow turned. He thought he was the pursuer. But the shadow was the one leading him into ever-darker corners. The man never understood: you do not *watch* the shadow. You *feed* it.
This is doomscrolling. You think you are watching the news. But the news is watching *you*. Every headline is a shadow-shaped hook. Every notification is a tug on your *nafs*. The Muslim professional who spends an hour a day on Twitter absorbing the injustices of the ummah—is he seeking justice or feeding his own helplessness? The entrepreneur who scrolls LinkedIn for “networking” but never builds—is she building or performing?
The lie is comfortable. The truth is uncomfortable: your attention is not yours. It is rented. The landlord is the algorithm. The rent is your soul’s stillness.
## THE PROTOCOL
Three steps. This week. Not next month. This week.
**STEP 1: Audit – Install screen-time tracker. Review weekly – what did you feed the shadow?**
Sunday evening. Open your phone. Look at the numbers. Not the apps—the *hours*. Total screen time. Each app. Ask: *Did this feed my shadow or starve it?* Be brutal. If you spent three hours on Instagram, you fed the shadow of comparison. If you spent one hour on the news, you fed the shadow of helplessness. Write it down. Name each shadow. The shadow of envy. The shadow of outrage. The shadow of distraction. This is your *zakat* of attention—a tax on what you owe your own *ruh*.
**STEP 2: Separate – Label each app: Consumption / Curation / Creation / Contemplation**
Draw four boxes in your notes app. Write the names of every app you use. Sort them.
- **Consumption**: Netflix, YouTube (passive), Twitter (doomscroll), TikTok.
- **Curation**: Podcasts you *choose*, newsletters you *apply*, bookmarks you *return to*.
- **Creation**: Writing, designing, coding, recording, praying (yes, prayer is creation of stillness).
- **Contemplation**: Qur’an app, journaling app, meditation timer, a blank note.
If more than 60% of your apps are Consumption—you are feeding the shadow. The goal is not to delete them all. The goal is to *see* the ratio. Once you see, you cannot unsee.
**STEP 3: Redirect – Replace 30 minutes of doomscroll with 30 minutes of creation (write, build, pray, move)**
Set a timer. 5:00 PM. Every day. When the notification pings, you stop scrolling. You open a blank page. Or you open your *sajdah*. Or you open your code editor. Or you open your body—walk, stretch, breathe. Thirty minutes. Not one hour—that’s too intimidating. Thirty minutes of *feeding the shadow of barakah* instead of the shadow of *shaytan*. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The two feet of the son of Adam will not move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about… his time, how he spent it.” You are being asked *now*.
## SHAH/CFO FINAL WORD
**SHAH:** The man who chased his shadow died exhausted, believing he had run a great race. The man who sat still watched the shadow dissolve at dusk. You do not defeat the shadow by fighting it. You defeat it by turning toward the light.
**CFO:** Your attention is your only non-renewable asset. Time compounds. Every hour you spend doomscrolling is an hour you cannot invest in learning, building, or praying. The rich don’t work for money—they *buy time*. The wise don’t scroll for comfort—they *sell distraction*. Audit your portfolio of attention. Rebalance it. Your future self will either thank you or audit your grave.
## REFLECTION
What would it cost you—in *this* life and the next—if you treated your next hour of screen time as a *sadaqah* of attention, spent only on what feeds your *ruh* instead of your shadow? |
